Waterside Karori turn Central League into a two-horse race

Waterside Karori’s upset win over Wellington Olympic has seen the top two Ultra Football Central League teams clear out from the pack.

Miramar Rangers and Western Suburbs remain separated by just one point after both won over the weekend, but Olympic are now seven points behind leaders Miramar with six games to play.

That was due to Karori’s 3-2 win on Saturday at Karori Park, with Merlin Luke-Miny bagging a brace for the home side, while Jerram Tuck scored the winner in the 89th minute.

Miramar’s 2-1 win over North Wellington came courtesy of a 93rd-minute winner from Aaron Spain. Miramar had led since the fourth minute until the 88th, when Nathan Simes equalised, only for Spain to break North Wellington hearts.

Wests enjoyed a far more comfortable weekend with a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Wairarapa United. Ryan Feutz and Jaylen Rodwell scored in the first half, before Ihaia Delaney sealed the win in the 58th minute.

Petone are level on eight points at the bottom of the ladder with Wairarapa, but remain ahead by four goals on goal difference, despite their 7-0 loss to Napier City Rovers. Fergus Neil and Liam Schofield both scored braces for Napier.

Lower Hutt City beat Stop Out 4-2 in the round’s other match after Luis Toomey scored after just 27 seconds – before Stop Out had even had a touch on the ball.

In the Ultra Football W-League, the goal difference battle to decide the league remains hotly contested between Wellington United and Palmerston North Marist.

With two games to go, Wellington remain ahead by just one goal after their 5-1 win over Seatoun on Saturday. That was matched in differential by PNM’s 4-0 win over Western Suburbs.

There are two games to go and the sides do not meet each other again, meaning every goal counts towards deciding the league title.

Goal difference is the first tie breaker (held by Wellington United by one goal), then goals for (held by PNM by one goal), followed by goal difference in the matches between the team (held by Wellington United).

Wellington United’s Jemma Robertson is ahead in the Golden Boot race with 24, two ahead of PNM”s Mikaela Boxall.

In the round’s other matches, North Wellington got their second win of the season when stunning Petone 2-1 to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

Wairarapa United played out a thriller with Waterside Karori before eventually prevailing 6-4, with seven goals scored in the second half.
