Manawatu Weekly Football review – Round 13

29TH  and 30TH    August

13 straight weekends in a row is unheard of here in the last 8 seasons! What frustrations COVID presented the weather has played her part in not compounding them. Below we have included the upcoming knock-out cup draws for most divisions.

In a weekend where titles were won and lost here are my misinformed and on many occasions made up opinions on what went on around the local footballing scene this weekend just gone.

PS – please send in photos and/or videos of your action, we would love to post them.

YORB Horizons Premiership

City March on with a resounding win over across town rivals Athletic. The game was played at a terrific pace with all the ferocity of a local derby, with high quality goals to boot! City look to be in pole position for the league title. Young Charlie Cardie netting a hat-trick and Ants Bell another brace. team/Lewis Feilding United were too strong for Hokowhitu FC away at Skoglund Park on Saturday. A James Hart goal in the 14th minute putting Feilding on their way and a 87th minute goal by Michael Whitmore rounding out the three-nil when for Feilding. North End reserves were simply sensational on Memorial Park Saturday. At one-nil going into half-time nobody could have foreseen what was going to happen in the second half. EIGHT unanswered goals to the peoples club and a really tough day at the office for Marist Reserves.  Youngjae Lee with four and Matt Borren with three. Takaro hosted Massey and the teams played out a seven goal thriller which saw six goals in the second half! Massey securing all three points with a 88thminute Jamie Wilsher goal!

Round 14 key match: PNBHS 1st XI v JPAC Homes Hokowhitu. The kids slipped up last week and will need to bounce back. How resilient will they be after being away at Super 8’s all week?

YORB Premiership Golden Boot Race: 20 Ants Bell (Wanganui City), 15 Ben Mori (PNBHS), 10 Jordan Gilmore (Athletic), Jaiden Meyer (PNBHS), Scott Mudgway (Hokowhitu), Ayrton Smith (Takaro), Michael Whitmore (Feilding United)

360 Logistics Championship.

There were 11 goals in the Takaro v A’s game on the weekend with the A;s coming out on the right side of the tally winning seven-four. That man Gwylym Hamilton bagging another Hat-trick. Feilding United Reserves continued to look bright and got a hard fought and well deserved win over Massey University. Michael Whitmore bagging a brace in just 120 seconds! Jokers and PNBHS 2nd XI played out yet another thrilling encounter. The experience Jokers racing out to a lead before the youthful PNBHS side fought back at pushed hard. Jokers doing enough to hold on three-two in the end. A Dom Semmens 84th minute goal the winner on the day. Three first half goals to North End Veterans set them up for another win this season. Matt Wallace who is having a good season in front of goal set the tone with a 7th minute goal. North End making peace with throwing away a three goal lead in the first round fixture.

Round 14 key match: Red Sox A’s v North End Veterans. North End will want to secure second spot but the classy A’s side are a difficult proposition.

360 Logistics Golden Boot Race:  20 Gwylym Hamilton (Red Sox), 9 Scott Gillespie (North End), 8 Lee Moses (PN Marist), Matt Wallace (North End)

Manawatu Division 2

A cliff hanger of a match was DnB v Massey Rangers. Locked at one-all neither side good take their chances to steal all three points. Linton 1sts remain unbeaten for the season after beating Wrinklies three-nil on the weekend. Linton off to 360 Logistics next season. I really didn’t want to do this….but David Spencer scored two. Levin Sports came, saw and conquered Greenies three-nil on a windy Celaeno Park. A brace by Joel Nugteren doing the damage for the visitors. In the other Marist v Levin match Resonant Masters won three-nil over Levin thirds.

Manawatu Division 3

Fury earnt a hard fought point as they battled with DSC Vikings, game ended locked at one-all. Inter just slipped past Saints one-nil. Inter only one of two teams that are unbeaten across all the Manawatu leagues this season. Linton reserves controlled the game and were value for their two-nil win of the Celts. Massey Athletic cemented their second spot place with a comfortable win over north End socials.

Manawatu Division 4

Hokowhitu Hustlers couldn’t repeat their round one heroics in beating Jesters. Jesters taking the game two-nil. DSC Rangers made the trek to Levin and it was well worth it with a four-two win over the home side. Feilding United and Plunderers played out a six goal encounter that could have easily gone either way. Both sides missing chances to secure all three points. Robert Marsh with a Brace for the home side and Karl Radford with a brace for the visitors.

Masters

On a weekend where the top two sides slipped up it didn’t matter as Jennian Homes Feilding United were crowned league Champions. Feilding who were on the road to Levin and the home side handed Feilding only its 2nd defeat of the season. It alleged the 45 minute trip took considerably longer on the way home…….

Legends couldn’t capitalize on Feilding’s loss going down 3-2 Marist Banshee’s. RSM Old Boys continue a good spell of form beating Rovers comfortably.

Manawatu Women’s Premiership

North End became the first team to beat Mayhem this season and possibly in the last two seasons? A game of real quality and intensity that North End were able to win two-one. This “blip” shouldn’t detract from the remarkable season Mayhem have had, This does setup a tasty Green Family Cup encounter in a few weeks. Evergreenz and Levin played out a seven goal thriller with the home side doing enough to take all three points. A 83rd minute goal from Jane Archer proving to be the difference on the day.  In the final game Massey travelled to Feilding and Dombrowski was again on fire, the students game four-one. The Feilding side put up a spirited performance and its youthfulness a glimpse of good things to come.

Manawatu Women’s Championship

Mysteries were too strong from Hawks on the day and took the game by a comfortable margin. Masseys Golden Girls and PN Marist played out a great game with all the right intent and spirit. Massey just edging it come full-time. Avengers and Valkyrie couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes and the two-all score-line likely left both teams regretting not taking their opportunities. North End had their eye on the prize and Misfits struggled to contain them. Maria Caryle and Axel Oswaldon fire in front of goal. Below is the draw for this seasons Tingey Plate.

Lotto Central Federation League:

Arena Manawatu kick started the weekend on Friday night when Watsons PN Marist hosted Isles Construction Massey University with Marist being too strong winning 5-0, Elijah Smith scoring twice. On Saturday GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic did enough to beat Breakers Red Sox 2-1 and hang onto top spot on the table. Also Saturday Building King Havelock North Wanderers won a goal fest 5-3 against North End over in Hawke’s Bay. The final match of the round was played Sunday when Peggy Gordons NP Rangers hosted Levin and ran out 8-0 winners with Domenico Squatriti Jnr bagging a four goal haul and Mark McGrath another hat-trick. Alexander Electric Napier Marist had the Bye and are back in action this Sunday when they host Massey.
